Data Availability Issues

The information is not available.

It is time to get creative! In most cases, if we use advanced research techniques, assumptions, proxies, or triangulation, we should be able to provide the client with value. There should be very few instances that we can not provide the client with comprehensive research. If, after using the techniques shared above, we can proceed with a client update, which still provides the client with value! Many clients are happy with client updates because they now know the information is unavailable.

The information the client asked for is not available, but this is. Do you think they will be happy with this?

It is our job to present the client with the best information possible if we are in a situation where the information is not available. Follow the directions for a client update in order to let the client know we left no stone unturned!

Only dated sources are available to answer the question.

You may use these sources, then explain in your Research Strategy that this is the most current information. You will need to back this up with a source.

The client wants revenue (or any other fact) from a specific year, but it is unavailable.

In this case, first, try to find their annual report for the selected year. If they do not have an annual report, you can always use Wayback Time Machine and a trusted third part source to see what they stated the revenue was for that year. If none of these options work, you can then proceed to locate the revenue from the nearest year to what was requested. For example, if they want revenue from 2018, but the only one we can locate is from 2017, then we will substitute this information and explain this to the client in our Research Strategy.

The company I am supposed to research is no longer in operation.

The client wants 5 companies, but I can only find 3.

In this case, you will proceed with a scope expansion and follow the directions given.
