• Be exact with your prompts. For example, do not ask for revenue. Ask for 2022 revenue.
• If you need a specific number of examples, etc., include that in your prompt.
• The more exact you can be, the better the response. Think of how you feel when you get beautifully crafted Research Criteria that tell you exactly what to do. This is the same thing; you are the Research Manager for generative AI chats.
• Make sure to select the appropriate plugins based on your research goals.
• You can now provide common instructions, such as the age of sources to be used and sites to be excluded, as Custom Instructions in ChatGPT. That way, you would not need to write long prompts (better to include a short reminder to follow the custom instructions properly in the prompt).
• Asking AI to create a table is a good way to organize information when there are multiple criteria to research.
• You will NOT get enough information in the first prompt to answer everything mentioned in the sample prompts provided below. You will then need to ask follow-up questions to complete the research (prompt-chaining). For example, one follow-up question to look for revenue, another to look for funding, etc.
• Do not ask for everything in a single prompt. If you need to find a lot of data points, break the project down into multiple smaller parts and prompt individually.
• Sometimes the best we will get from this method is ideas or starter points to perform the research on our own.
• You can also feed sources that you found into ChatGPT Plus and ask the model to perform analysis, find similar data, and/or combine data from yours as well as ChatGPT’s sources.

Best/Top Lists

Sample Prompt: Create a table that compiles a list of the top (enter number) and (enter the what) in the (Geographic Scope) based on their (Revenue, market share, employee count, etc.). For each company, provide their revenue, market share, and a description. Use only reputable sources from the last 24 months. Do not use Wikipedia, Owler, or Quora.

Example: Create a table that compiles a list of the top 10 automotive manufacturers in the United States based on their revenue. For each company, provide their revenue, market share, and a description. Use only reputable sources from the last 24 months.

Notes: Feel free to change what should be provided. Using a table for this organizes the information in a much more readable format.

Best Practices with Metrics of Success

Sample Prompt: Develop a list of (enter number) best practices for (enter topic), with a (geographic scope) focus. For each best practice, provide a brief description, explain why it is a best practice, and provide success metrics that prove it is a best practice. Use sources from the last 24 months, avoiding Quora, Wikipedia, and Owler.

Example: Develop a list of three best practices for onboarding new employees remotely, with a global focus. For each best practice, provide a brief description, explain why it is considered a best practice, and provide success metrics. Use sources from the last 24 months, avoiding Quora, Wikipedia, and Owler.

Notes: Most likely, you will only get a list of the best practices and will have to ask more specific questions to get the rest of the data. Testing showed mixed results.
